In today’s post, we will examine imposter syndrome: what it is, how it can limit your potential and strategies to help you overcome it.

Now about what imposter syndrome is, you may be surprised to know that 70% of people live with imposter syndrome. It is an internal experience of believing that you are not as competent as others perceive you to be.

To put it simply, it is the experience of feeling like a deceiver—you feel as though at any moment you are going to be found out as a fraud—like you don't belong where you are, and you only got there through dumb luck. It can affect anyone no matter their social status, work background, skill level, or degree of expertise.

It isn’t a diagnosis or a medical problem but rather a pattern of thinking that can lead to self-doubt, negative self-talk and missed opportunities.

Let's dive into the negative impact of imposter syndrome

HOW CAN IMPOSTER SYNDROME LIMIT MY POTENTIAL?

Feelings of self-doubt can create fear, anxiety, and stress. It can lead to a drop in job performance and job satisfaction while increasing burnout.

Imposter syndrome can negatively affect your personal and work life in the following ways:

1. It creates self-doubt and low self-esteem

People will reject praise, downplay achievements and allow others to take the acclaim.  They feel incompetent, unloved or inadequate. They also lack confidence in who they are and what they can do

Sufferers may not demand or even expect a promotion or a pay rise, or may simply not push themselves forward at work. 

original 1978 study, shows that people living with imposter syndrome, when being promoted feels there must be a mistake in the selection process because they don't think they deserve it.  

They are constantly afraid of making mistakes or letting other people down. The fear of not succeeding may cause them to hold themselves back and avoid seeking higher achievements. 

Sufferers will feel vulnerable and fear being exposed, making tough, unpopular decisions becomes harder and showing strong leadership less likely. 

Fearing failure inhibits less creativity and inventiveness. sufferers cannot try something new because they are scared of the unknown

Creating stress, anxiety, lack of self-confidence, shame, frustration and feelings of isolation. This is particularly relevant now. 

A 2014 study shows that people with impostor syndrome tend to stay in their positions because they do not believe that they can do better. The person may undervalue their skills or fail to recognize how other roles might place more importance on their abilities.

Overcoming imposter syndrome starts with recognizing your potential and taking ownership of your achievement. Here are a few tips that would help you;

1. Develop a Healthy Response to Failure and Mistake 

Do you know that most of the people we look up to today had a history of failure at one point in life? 

Robert F. Kennedy says “Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.” So instead of beating yourself up for falling short, learn from the loss and move on reminding yourself, “I’ll get there next time. And yes, you will

 Focus on measuring your achievements instead of holding them up against others’. Comparing your own life to a carefully curated influencer’s social media feed, for example, is a trap for feeling like you don’t measure up. Understand that your difference is where your uniqueness lies.

How to Deal With Imposter Syndrome When Taking a New Role

Many developers are consumers of the React framework  but when we need to go beyond just creating frontend React nextJS comes in handy. In this article we cover NextJS, what it is and how we can better React apps with NextJS.

Next.js is a React front-end framework(meaning  it builds on the react framework) that lets you optimize performance and user experience through additional pre-rendering features like out-of-the-box server-side rendering and static site generation. It was created by a hosting company called Vercel(formally called Zeit). You don’t need any configuration of webpack or similar tools to start using Next.js. It comes preconfigured for production. It is also called the framework for production. Next.js is used by full-stack developers to build reactive websites as it requires a good understanding of both client-side React and server-side architectures.

Please Note, This post assumes that you have at least basic knowledge of React and JavaScript.

The section above mentioned that NextJS implements sever side rendering. Which is a render technique used by NextJS and also traditional applications. In SSR the server is in charge of render view to page, unlike like client side rendering where the view is render by client side JavaScript. SSR allows the server to access all required data and process the JavaScript together to render the page. Then, the page is sent back in its entirety to the browser and immediately rendered. SSR allows webpages to load in a fraction of the time and increases user experience with added responsiveness.

This is the process of compiling and rendering a website or web app at build time. The output is a bunch of static files, including the HTML file itself and assets like JavaScript and CSS. Essentially, a static site generator automates the task of coding individual HTML pages and gets those pages ready to serve to users ahead of time.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Because NextJS use SSR and Static Site Generation to render pages, apps built with NextJS are extremely fast and efficient by default, thereby improving SEO and User Experience. NextJS prerenders pages on the server which makes it very easy for search engines and bots to easy scrape data on the website. 

Pre-rendering, both static generation (SSG) and server-side rendering (SSR) are supported
Server-side rendering (SSR) is preparing of content of a page on a server, while one-page React application uses client-side rendering (CSR). With SSR you can easily make async actions  before the page loads. I.e Imagine you have a backend API and your NextJS app on different servers (off course with NextJS you can couple them together), you can easily fetch data like user data before the page ever finish loading. All this can be done without the need of a loader because it would be done before the page renders.

NextJS is still React with added features, so all react features are still applicable. 

Full-stack capabilities
NextJS makes it easier for React developers to add back-end code to the project. It very easy here to add our own code for storing data, getting data, authentication etc.

Automatic code splitting
Next.js is clever enough to only load the Javascript and CSS that are needed for any given page. This makes for much faster page loading times, as a user’s browser doesn't have to download Javascript and CSS that it doesn't need for the specific page the user is viewing. This increases performance as there is less for the user’s browser to download and the user benefits from seeing the page content quicker.

Hot Module Replacement (HMR)
This is less important for the end users of an application but very important for developers. HMR allows developers to see any changes they have made during development, live in the application as soon as they have been made. However, unlike traditional "live reload" methods, it only reloads the modules that have actually changed, preserving the state the application was in and significantly reducing the amount of time required to see changes in action.

Getting started with NextJS is very easily. Just like React, create-react-app can easily get you started like-wise NextJS with create-next-app. 

Open your terminal and install create-next-app globally, run this command

 After that finished, open the directory where you want project and run this command

Working in the Tech industry invariably means you get to spend a lot of time on your laptop and smartphones and for all we know, the lights emanating from these screens are not healthy for the eyes.

The eye is among the most important organs of the human body. Without it, we cannot function optimally so it’s necessary we take precautions to ensure that our eyes are healthy.

Too much screen time can be damaging to the eyes but for someone who makes a living off the internet, these lights also known as Blue Lights are unavoidable.

Blue Lights, simply put are a range of lights that contain the highest amount of energy in the visible spectrum. Your laptops, smartphones, your LED televisions all have one thing in common: Blue Lights of which excessive exposure to, have been found to cause certain damages to the retina.

Too much exposure to blue Lights can cause Macular degeneration (which can lead to permanent vision loss), and Digital eye strain.

According to Charles Awuzie, a Nigerian TechPreneur based in South Africa, one of the good advices we should no longer take in 2023 is “Reduction of Screen time”. Just like he said, we now work, study, hold meetings and carryout transactions on devices and screens. Reducing screen time will mean reducing productivity and for a large part of the world population, it will mean putting a limit to our source of income especially, people in Tech. This does not mean he cared less about eye health.

What can you then do to keep your eyes healthy and out of harm’s way even as you work in the Tech space?

1. Blue light filters: if you are always exposed to the “screen”, a convenient way to reduce exposure is to apply blue light filters to your device screen. These filters are available for smartphones, computer screens and tablets and you can easily purchase them where computer devices/electronics are sold.

2. Protective eye wears: wearing blue light blocking glasses, yellow-tinted computer glasses or glasses with anti-reflective lenses can also help keep your eyes safe. 

3. Ensure you rest your eyes: choose a time when you usually get off work and use that period to rest your eyes.it could be during the weekend when you do not have much to do on your computer.

4. Eat foods that support eye health: consuming less junks and more healthy foods will help you stay fit. Special attention should be paid to carrots, bell peppers, kale, spinach, broccoli, strawberries, oysters, salmon, eggs, meats and healthy fats as they promote and support good eye health.

Having a career in Tech and especially working remotely means we cannot totally avoid exposure to Blue lights but we can take measures to keep safe while on the screen. Do the best you can to support your eye health.

As much as technological skills are trending, and one cannot go wrong with them, one’s reasons for venturing in matter a lot. Every action is backed up by a motive and pursuing a career in Tech is not an exception.

It is your reasons for going into a thing that help you stay put when the going gets tough and it doesn’t seem rosy and, it is definitely the wrong reasons that see people giving up on something when it turns out not being as they expected.

Here are some wrong Reasons people go into Tech

Money: Before you say “What?” please calm down, please, LOL! Are you calm now? Great! We know money is good and necessary for everyday living. We know also, that money is one of the reasons why we learn skills and go into businesses. Money is a motivation. But what happens when you go into Tech solely for the money and the money is not forthcoming? This is why passion is necessary. When you make money your only motivation and propelling force, frustration becomes inevitable.

Friends: Some people go into Tech and venture into particular area because they have friends that are in that particular niche who are hitting the money big. You do not have same passion as them so it would be wrong to toe the Tech path because of your friends.

To prove a point: The issue of “others are doing it, why can’t I” or “I can do better than what he or she is currently doing”, is a very wrong reason to take an action most especially in Tech. others are into it, and so what if you are not cut out for it?

For the title:  Some people fancy the titles “Tech Bro”, “Tech Sis”, “Programmer”, etc. These are mere titles and are worth nothing if the bearer doesn’t know his onion or, do you not know that there are broke Tech bro and sis?

Look beyond the above reasons and find what motivates you naturally. Do not go into Tech because your friends are all gone in or because you feel that it is the new gold or because it is all the rave.

It is also important to speak with someone who is in Tech to mentor and counsel you and to help you discover your why.

Wrong reasons why People venture into Tech

That’s right, you want to learn a digital skill.

It’s awesome to improve on oneself and that also includes improving financially.

You have access to the internet so it’s dumb to think that you do not know what’s trending: Technological skills!

Call it digital skill, soft skill, technological skill, it all means the same thing: A skill that requires more of intellectual/mental work than physical strength to carry out. It is all the rave and yes! It is worth it.

Do not be a run-away science student that jumps into more complex science in Tech, LOL! Actually some guys avoided sciences not because they cannot take the heat but because they were not properly taught at the formation stage.

If you feel you can do it, go for it then. You would want to do what you do with some level of ease, right? More like it comes naturally. This aid your learning process.

Duration: some skills take longer to learn than others. So, if your goal is to learn and perfect in a month or two and start earning, well, consider skills you can master quickly.

In summary, know what you can take, what your goals for the skill are, whether they be long term or short term.

And yes, no one skill is better than the other. It all boils down to what you make of it.
